Curriculum Requirements

The program requires students to complete 12 credit hours while enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Virginia. DH courses may simultaneously count toward students’ departmental requirements.

Two core courses:

  • DH 8991: Introduction to the Digital Humanities. This course is offered in the fall.
  • DH 7008: Practicum. This course is offered in the spring.

Two electives, fulfilled in any of the following three ways:

  1. A standard DH elective has a syllabus with built-in DH content, and the registrar automatically counts it toward fulfillment of DH Certificate requirements.

  2. For a customized elective, a student proposes the addition of a DH component to any graduate course in any department. While the course syllabus would not normally include any DH content, the student would develop a digital humanities project that fits with the course's goals. The course instructor and the DH Certificate director must both approve the student's proposal, and either may assess the technical aspects of the project as part of the student's course grade.

The registrar must be informed that the course counts toward the Certificate.

  3. For an independent study in DH (DH 8993), a student proposes a syllabus and meets regularly with a faculty mentor or instructor of record.  The course instructor and the DH Certificate director must approve the student's proposal, and either may assess the technical aspects of coursework.

The registrar must be informed that the course counts toward the Certificate.
