Who is eligible?

The program is open to any enrolled graduate student in any school at UVA.

Students in both master’s and doctoral programs are welcome.

While students are encouraged to apply during their first semester of graduate school, students at a later stage may be considered for admission.

Certificate students must also be enrolled in a UVA department or school; i.e. there is no free-standing DH Certificate program or online course option.

Curriculum Requirements

The program requires students to complete 12 credit hours while enrolled as a graduate student at the Universiy of Virginia.  DH courses may simultaneously count toward students' departmental requirements. 

Two core courses:

  • DH 8991: Introduction to the Digital Humanities
  • DH 7008: Practicum

Two electives, fulfilled in any of the following ways:

  • Standard electives, designated as such in advance
  • Customized electives
  • Independent studies in DH

How to Apply

The admissions process is not onerous, but it requires several steps, so please start the process as soon as possible.

  • Meet with the program director for intake advising. (Email mapp@virginia.edu for an appointment)

  • Submit your materials in the admissions portal between September 1 and October 1. (Link will be posted here.)

    • Statement of purpose
    • Unofficial transcript
    • One-sentence statement of support from an advisor
    • Responses to questions in admissions portal
